I have worked for Keystone since 2018 and now work as both a tutor and educational consultant. During this time, I have worked with students of all levels and backgrounds who need support or stretch with writing in a range of subjects, as well as those preparing to apply or study at leading universities. My areas of expertise lie in writing in all subjects, interview skills and the subject areas of History and History of Art.

To my work with university applicants, I bring a detailed knowledge of the application processes and key criteria for admissions at a range of highly competitive institutions. I am familiar with the criteria applied by university markers, as well as the syllabi and marking criteria of all major exam boards with qualifications in History and History of Art. I have extensive experience helping students to master essay writing and research skills for numerous other subjects, from Religious Studies to Management, as well as academic interview techniques.

Biography

I grew up in south-west Cornwall and completed my secondary schooling with A-Levels in History, French, History of Art and Art. As an undergraduate, I studied History of Art at the Courtauld Institute before taking an MA in Cultural and Intellectual History. After working in the antiquarian book trade in London, I did a PhD in History at the University of St Andrews, where I also taught undergraduates and tutored privately, focusing on writing, as well as interview and communication skills.

I spent a year as a fellow at the British School at Rome (British Academy) and published my first history book, on the Roman Inquisition, in 2020. My most recent book, City of Echoes (2023), is a popular history of Rome and the popes and was published in the UK, USA, Italy and elsewhere. I occasionally write about history for popular magazines and speak about the history of Europe on podcasts, and have appeared as an expert on national radio and TV.

In 2018, I began working for Keystone, for whom I work as both a tutor and university consultant, with a special focus on postgraduate applications for a wide range of subjects, from Management to Anthropology.

Approach to Tutoring

My approach is based on two principles: individual engagement and method.

Engagement: All students are individuals who engage more quickly and energetically if they are interested in the topic or skill that they are trying to master. Therefore, I assess each student not only on their current abilities but also their motivations and personality and adapt my sessions and approach accordingly. Ultimately, my aim is to motivate my students to learn during our time together and long after our lessons have finished, which leads to real transformations in their skills, knowledge and results.

Method: I believe that all academic tasks, subjects and skills can be mastered with a methodical approach and consistent work. For this reason, I plan individual sessions and long-term programmes with clear short and long-term objectives, as well as giving concrete advice on what students can do between our sessions to maximise results.

When not tutoring

Outside of teaching and consultancy, I research, write and speak on the history of religion and politics.

The rest of my spare time is devoted to my family and my naughty Jack Russell, Ludo.
