Alexander is a Maths and Science tutor who has taught alongside his studies for years. He is currently balancing tutoring alongside working on his PhD at University College London (researching Theoretical Particle Physics). The vast majority of my professional experience is academic in nature. Immediately after finishing school, I worked as a teaching assistant at a secondary school, which is where my interest in tutoring began. Since then, I have been tutoring alongside my university studies, and will be doing some undergraduate teaching as a PhD student.
I am currently a PhD student at University College London, where I am researching theoretical particle physics. Before this, I completed a BSc (Hons) in Mathematics and Physics at the University of Bristol, and a MSc in Physics at UCL, obtaining first class honours and a distinction respectively.
Before starting university, I already offered mathematics tutoring, and I expanded this to include the sciences once I began my undergraduate course. By tutoring alongside my own learning, I have been able to identify what makes studying mathematics and science challenging, and what can make it easier.
I have a genuine passion for education, having lived my life on both sides of it for the past six years. In the future I intend to become a lecturer, so I can continue to teach students about fascinating topics.
As a tutor of Maths and the Sciences, I recognise the importance of intuition to all four subjects. It is great if a student can answer questions they recognise with ease, but it is even better if they can tackle unfamiliar problems too.
As such, my aims as a tutor are two-fold. Firstly, to equip a tutee with the knowledge and tools required for them to succeed in their exams. Secondly, to build up a student鈥檚 confidence in their core skillset, so that they can apply their existing knowledge to totally new scenarios.
Above all, I prioritise patience and understanding. One of the most important factors in a child鈥檚 success in a subject is how they feel about it, so I make sure to make my lessons enjoyable and light-hearted.
When I鈥檓 not tutoring, I鈥檓 usually working on my research. Outside of the academic world, I play 5-a-side football (badly) and have recently started bouldering. I love cryptic crosswords, which I occasionally create, and can sometimes be found taking a pub quiz far too seriously. I鈥檓 an avid reader and seldom leave the house without a book!
